Family size SUV’s are hot right now; European
SUV’s even better. So how does the five seat Audi Q5 stack up? Let’s take a look. Audi has long been associated with style and
superiority but, as cheaper vehicles close the gap, rightly or wrongly, I find myself
expecting more from our prestige friends. With a solid entry price and a few costly
options like metallic paint, adaptive air suspension, seat comfort package and technique
package, this Q5 comes in just under $100,000. And here’s a bit of what you get for that
and what you don’t get. Inside the Q5 feels every bit its prestige
price tag. Leather, soft touch finishes and a lot of
clever technology. Finish and craftsmanship is pretty much perfect
and it certainly helps separate Audi from cheaper brands. Digital radio, satellite navigation, Bluetooth
and Apple CarPlay android auto connectivity are great inclusions, all standard. The option B&O 19 speaker sound system is
awesome and so is the head up display which is colour. And I particularly like having that front
and centre for the navigation guidance but these are both part of a pricy option package. Electric adjust seats with driver seat memory
are standard but our option seat comfort package adds massage function for the front seats. In the second row the comfort and plush finish
continues. That seat package I mentioned also adds recline
and slide function to the second row seats. We’ve got charge points, we’ve got climate
control, we’ve got a nice arm rest with cup holders, seat back pockets but no heated
seats. Also this middle occupant will suffer a little
bit where foot space is concerned. Moving to the all-important boot space and
you’ll find an auto tailgate and plenty of room. Bag hooks, nets and anchor points keep your
gear secure and the blind keeps it hidden. 20 inch alloys are standard but beneath the
boot floor you will find a space saver spare only. On the go the turbo diesel engine feels gutsy
and responsive. The steering is great and a bunch of driver
aids make outward vision and parking a breeze. Those 20 inch wheels, paired with great suspension,
deliver a lovely, surprisingly, supple ride. Driver assist technology includes adaptive
cruise control, lane keep assist and blind spot monitoring; all standard on this Q5 and
so it should be at this price point. If you are a stickler for details and like
the finer things in life, the Audi Q5 is going to be right up your alley. And the prestige price tag, well it’s a
given, just don’t expect it to include everything.
