Here’s Why You Should Never Fix Your Car

Here’s Why You Should Never Fix Your Car

rev up your engines today I’m gonna talk
about when it might be a good idea not to fix your car right away you might think
hey that’s crazy a mechanic telling you when you just should leave something
alone I’ll fix it well you fixed it for 52 years and I see the problems that can
occur that don’t mean all that much that you couldn’t let slide know the first
thing has to do with an automatic transmission let’s say your automatic
transmission his problems going into overdrive the last gear in many vehicles
that cost thousands of dollars to fix I have had customers with broken over
drives especially the ones you can turn on by pushing a button
I just don’t turn it off you don’t use it let’s say it’s a 4-speed automatic
with an overdrive then you only have four speeds I know over generally the only
thing it’s gonna do is get worse gas mileage and a highway by a little bit
I’ve got customers driving like that for years if you can get away with it
go right ahead customers with standard transmissions let’s say the fifth gear
doesn’t work it keeps popping out of fifth gear showing that fifth gears
wearing out well I just told don’t use fifth gear some of them driving four or
five years down the line and they still work they just don’t use fifth gear and
often the first gear to go out is reverse in an automation
you put in Reverse won’t work or doesn’t work at first but then after you wait a
little while put it in Drive and then put it back in reverse it backs up that
means that reverse is starting to go out but I’ve had customers drive him years
that way by parking the vehicles where they don’t have to back up all that
often I’ve been a customer with a chamois that
reverse completely why not put it reverse wouldn’t do anything but it
worked fine and driving he deliberately parked in places where his nose was
sticking out so he could just drive out not have to back up he did it for three
years and was still driving the thing now a carts if he got stuck he went to a
bar or something hey he’d have a bunch of friends with him so if he did have to
back up they could push it backwards I didn’t he drive it forward that’s kind
of an extreme example but you get what I’m coming in here transmission work
these days is so expensive it could cost you three five thousand
dollars in work to rebuild the transmission and if it’s got a minor
flaw hey you can just bypassed it as long
you can’t baby let’s say if you’re going real fast and you accelerate from zero
to 20 and has a real hard time shifting from first to second and jerks and
clunks hey just accelerate slower I had a car like that for years I know it’s a
standard transmission so what had was I’d go faster in first gear then I
wouldn’t hang on a second here I go up to third gear when five years that way
I’m still rolling down the road now the next thing you might hold off is
extremely rare intermittent running problems over the
years I’ve had scores as far as the customers say you know every once in a
while my car just does a hiccup where kind of jerks and goes back to running
normal and I’ll say well how often do it happen he said well it happen a couple times
in the last month or so now of course you never know what’s doing it modern
day computers are so sophisticated in late-model cars when I hook up a scan
tool it will show me every misfire that ever occurred in the engine which
cylinder it happened in how many times it misfired but let’s say you go to a
guy like me hooking up I say well you have no misfires on your data recorder
and it’s running perfectly fine well hey just keep driving it that way so it’s
got a glitch once in a while I’m all there once in a while my shoulder hurts
cuz I got it dislocated when I was playing goal in Toronto and ice hockey
so I just know if it’s a real wet humid cold day hey my show there might be a
little bit sore I never had an operated on there’s a catalytic converter often
you’ll get a call inefficient catalytic converter some cars have one cat some have two so have thee some even have four or more it can cost a fortune to replace
his catalytic converters if your car is still running perfectly fine odds are
you can keep driving it I had a customer yeah a Toyota Highlander
it had the inefficient Cat for six years in a row and perfectly fine
otherwise I’d reset it for him so he could get the car inspected and it was
old enough that it could have two Mills not ready but it would pass with two now
the modern ones can only pass with one so you can’t really do it I’d have but
back in the day I just kept resetting it and the strangest thing happened I did
that for six years in a row then the seventh year he came over he said well
it’s time to get my current spec you could you reset it I plugged my thing
and it didn’t have the inefficient catalytic converter car
anymore it had gone away by itself without changing a cat or anything so I
asked him I said have you done anything different but he said we are now I’m
buying gas from a different station and voila whatever was in that fuel burnt
matter and the catalytic converter efficiency code disappeared never came
back so there are many minor things in a car I had a customer with a Porsche they had the inefficient cat and it was a good cost about 14 grand to replace the
catalytic converters on that force and it ran perfectly fine I even tried the
old put the cleaner in the gas tank and drive it and I drove it a hundred miles
but it still kept coming back and that was four years ago he’s still driving
that Porsche and it runs perfectly fine but that’s that inefficient cat called
poppin off and another one is the small evap leak check engine light on it says
you have a small EVAP system leak you want to change the gas cap that doesn’t
cost much you could replace the EVAP canister vent valve they often go bad a
lot of them are easy to get to well that means that you have a tiny leak in an
evap system generally the cars will run perfectly fine I’ve had people drive
with small event leaks for over 10 years and the cars are still running fine
then comes the next thing I say don’t bother fixing it if there’s nothing wrong
squeaky brakes in the 60s young kid brakes didn’t squeak all that much because they
used asbestos brake pads which were just the right consistency they’re hard
enough to stop they could take the heat but they didn’t make much noise but time
decades later they found out that it caused lung cancer and made it illegal to sell it in the
United States they tried various materials of which many of them made
squeaky noises let’s say I got squeaky brakes take up all your tires you see
all the brake pads are still nice and thick they’re a lot thinner than a dime
or a nickel and there’s no leaks anywhere in a car stops fine yeah you’re
gonna live with it they absolutely positively get rid of squeaky brakes
sometimes you have to change the pads with quality pants and the rotors rotors
cost a lot of money they’re made out of solid steel and truly as long as you got
on a road say you’re going 65 and you slam on the brakes and the steering
wheel doesn’t shake their not warped anymore now if the rotors are warped if
the front rotors are warped when you hit the brakes at high speeds the steering
wheel will check if the back rotors are warped when you hit it hard at high
speeds the paddle will vacillate up and down
because it’s changing the pressure in the back but if it doesn’t do any of
that you can just leave the rotors alone and here’s a trick that I found years
ago there’s a Japanese company called Akebono and can’t you bill enough and
they make great brake pads for all kinds of cars they’re so well made I’ve had
customers it had brakes that were worn and the rotors also were kind of chewed
up a little bit too they were still flat they weren’t really gouged but they did
some chew on it they weren’t walk they didn’t shake when
you hit the brakes and anyone spend much money so uh I’ll just get a cab oh no
brake pads if I can find them for your car and I did put them on and guess what
no noise at all now if you don’t care about noise cheaper brake pads are off
and harder and that’s why they make that noise this week is actually a
sympathetic vibration it’s so hard that it vibrates instead of setting in and
squishing more so the cheap brake pads strangely enough often lasts longer than
the better brake pads because they’re harder the better ones are somewhat
softer so that instead of eating up the rotor and making noise it eats up the
pads the worst thing on earth is people found out years ago was I’m gonna buy
these metallic brake pads for a car that wasn’t made for metallic pets because
they grab better and yes they do cuz there’s metal particles in the brake
pads but those metallic brake pads also eat the rotors up really fast I’ve seen
people eat them up in 15,000 miles the modern ceramic brake pads on the other
hand they are better made they don’t eat them up like the metallic brake pads and
they work great you just got to make sure you get a quality ceramic brake pad
the akebono ceramics are very high quality I have tried other ceramic
brake pads notably ones made in China and they were garbage
they made all kinds of noise when I put them on one even made noise when I put
it on brand new rotors and the brand new Chinese pants and ace made noise usually
even the cheapest brake pads you can buy in a place like autozone if you buy new
rotors and the cheap pads they usually won’t mega nice but these Chinese ones
who they make noise even with new rotors common noises that day you might not
want to fix right away is start your car and you hear a low rail right in the
beginning coming from where the timing chain is now the celica won’t do that cuz
it doesn’t have a timing chain it’s got a rubber timing belt in there real quiet
but the matrix behind it does have a timing chain
and often these variable valve timing engines they will rattle in the front as
they age because the gene gets a little rattling until the engine starts for a
few seconds built-up oil pressure I’ve done the automatic tensioner pops and it
makes it tight or the variable valve timing system it’s somewhat drying when
you start it up it’s got to fill up with oil and it’ll make a little rattling
noise nothing mix it all the time while you’re driving hey forget it you’re
gonna have to fix that system but I have scores of customers with Toyota’s
Honda’s Nissan’s that they started up first thing it makes a little noise and it
goes away some of them still can drive them years that way and they
still go down the road and especially if you got old car it’s got one hundred fifty
two hundred thousand miles you probably don’t want to pay tear the whole engine
apart and replace all this stuff because if it’s in the variable valve timing
system it could cost you two three grand to replace that stuff so people will
just live with it if it only makes the noise on the startup and goes instantly
away and that’s a similar noise that you often get with older American cars
there’s some of the newer ones that still have hydraulic valve lifters
hydraulic valve lifters automatically adjust your valves there’s no need to
adjust them they work by oil pressure well when they get old
there’s too much air and you start up they start but then as soon as it warms
up the ticking goes away that’s hydraulic lifter noise though these cars
have 32 of these hydraulic lifters cost you a fortune to change your mom they
don’t bother to replace them if they start running bad and one of the
hydraulic lifters actually collapsed yeah but then it would run bad all the
time and it would set misfire codes because a collapse one wouldn’t be
opening and closing the valve so the engine would run poorly would have
misfires on that cylinder or any other cylinder with a collapse lifter and
really if you’re gonna fix the car that’s got a collapse lifter you got to
really replace them off because they’re all really worn and that’s an expensive
job and the last thing that you might think about not fixing it in your car I
don’t stupid tire pressure monitoring systems it’s not explained before and
all the modern cars the valve stems themselves have a sending unit that
sends the information to a computer in your car and tells you if the tire
pressures low on any of the tires well as they age the batteries inside go bad
they all eventually break if you have to change all four sensors have them
reprogram you got to take the tires pipe have the new ones put in and have
the tire put on rebounce changing all four you can easily spend
six to eight hundred dollars so forget that system one of these digital tire
gauges check the pressure anymore I have to do that by necessity in my own cars
because they’re all so old none of them have tire pressure monitoring systems
built in to them so I just checked the pressure myself if you find out that
stupid light as on says TPMS there’s got the little flat tire signal on that’s
warning on the system and you find out you’re gonna have to spay some money to
fix all these sensors and stuff just forget it get one of these check the
price of yourself I mean these things cost like 10 bucks if you got to spend
$800 to change them all out on your car whoa I throw that money away so now you
know a bunch of things that you might not bother to fix on your car the next
time it’s got a minor problem I know mechanics always trying to sell
things to people but I’m like my grandfather was also a mechanic I’m
honest I like helping people out and saving them money hey cars are gonna
break on their own there’s millions of cars in this country and there’s hey at
least a million of them here in Houston so I don’t have to worry about creating
work the work is created by friction and things wearing out bad designs you don’t
need to sell things to people that they don’t need, so if you never want to miss
