Local Legends: Denise Quintanilla, Rockstar Magazine Editor, Austin

Here behind me
is Willie Nelson, the patron saint
of Austin, Texas. I’m Denise Quintanilla,
Editor of Rockstar Magazine, professional fan,
musical tastemaker and unofficial
host of Austin, Texas. Today I’m gonna show
you my Austin. Follow me. I definitely have one
of the coolest jobs in Austin. I’m able to go
check out live music from a vantage point that is not available to everybody and I love sharing the view, I love sharing the story. It’s more than just the music,
there’s constant motion. There’s a creativity in the air whether you make anything or you’re a musician or not, it’s a really
inspiring place to be. We’re on the east side right now, and I’m gonna take you
to my very food truck in all of Austin, Texas.
It’s called La Barbecue and there’s a reason
the lines are a mile long. This is Dylan, the pit master, and he’s gonna show us
where all the magic happens. Let’s do it!
Ready? Yeah. We’ve got some briskets
on for Saturday. Wow.
They go through over a thousand pounds of meat a day and each brisket takes
sixteen hours to cook. One of the coolest things
about this place is that you can order up
to two days in advance. They’ll let you jump online,
place in your order, that way you can get in, get out
and it’s guaranteed, minus the wait. What can I get for ya? Alright, we’re going to do
the pork ribs and brisket. Perfect, thank you! I know it might be
tempting to do a sit-down dinner
in a nice restaurant, but this is
the way locals do it. So good. We’re at Waterloo Records, my favorite vinyl shop
in all of Austin. See the stage back here?
They offer instore performances usually three to
four times a week and you’ll see some amazing people.
Right over this way. Vinyl, vinyl, and more vinyl. You get to flip
through records, you get to play them
if you want to. They have turntables
back in the corner. It’s just completely different. So $61.68 is your total. You have to come
to Waterloo records. It’s a little off
the beaten path, but it captures
the Austin vibe. We’re at the White Horse
on a white horse. Look at this place,
uniquely Austin. Let me show you the stage. Some of the best honky tonk bands in all of Texas and beyond actually
have played here. Look at how worn the floor is. And then you’ll notice it
goes in a circle. That’s how much
dancing goes on here. White horse is one
of the only bars that offers whiskey on tap. So this is the Blue
Starlight Drive-in Movie Theater here in Austin, Texas. It’s not an experience
that you can get just anywhere. They do Indie flicks,
cult classics, kid’s movies. There’s something
for everybody here. You know how you buy
yourself candy at the movies? Well here we do s’mores. They sell kits,
the graham crackers, the chocolate, the marshmallow. And they have a bonfire
going outside and you put it together yourself. The drive-in is a must
whenever you’re visiting Austin. I am Denise Quintanilla,
and I am Austin.
