Safety Check: Water Bottle in a Hot Car

– My name is Dioni Amuchastegui,
I’m a stations battery tech with the M & E shop. I was taking a little
bit early lunch and sitting in the truck, happened to notice some smoke
out of the corner of my eye and looked over and
noticed that light was being refracted
through a water bottle and was starting to
catch the seat on fire. Water bottle was set
exactly like that, light was just shining through
the driver’s side window and shown right through
and burned those two spots in the seat right there. I was a little bit surprised, I actually had to
do a double-take and checked it again
and sure enough, it was super hot. I even stuck my hand
under the light. Hard to believe at first
but we tested it again and registered the heat. I don’t remember
exactly what it was, but with a non-contact
thermometer it was extremely hot,
it was hot enough to start burning a
hole through this seat so not something
you really expect, having a water bottle
catching your chair on fire. – [Male] So what’s
the temperature? – [Male] 211 right there, 213. Everybody carries water
bottles so if you have one in the cab of the truck,
just keep it out of the sun.
