a mclaren 600 mm my name is Dan and this is my garage and we do a lot of car
views and other interesting things talking about the ownership experience
of having a supercar if you happen to own a supercar that you’re trying to

out so apparently the McLaren 680 is supposed to be an incredible incredible
car and I’m actually really excited to drive this thing because so far Mike’s
face with McLaren has been kind of disappointing I know they’re fast really
really fast cars but they’ve all been fairly numb the owner of this car David
who you guys might remember from working on his wife’s 488 recently well he
claims that this car is really awesome has a lot of soul and really really as
exciting to drive I think he might be on to something here I actually took a ride
in it earlier I’m gonna say that the driving experience is like in just a
minute first let’s just kind of go over some of the things about this car that
you might find interesting so here’s the crazy thing about the
McLaren 610 tree-level supercar which i think is hilarious because the
performance numbers on this are insane so it is actually based on the mclaren
570s it has a similar chassis similar body design all that sort of stuff so it
is basically the track version of the baby Mack so the 600 LT the LT stands
for longtail which is kind of not really accurate cuz it’s only two point six
inches longer than the regular 570s it’s a historical thing McLaren had the LTS
the long tails that were you know they’re amazing race cars so they just
wanted to give that kind of heritage to this car the starting price for these is
actually pretty reasonable for how much how much performance e getting they
start at 240 but obviously once you start decking out with all sorts of
carbon bits yeah you’re looking closer to 300 thousand for something like this
on the brand new market although I don’t think you can actually get them new
anymore because they only made them for one year 2019 so yes this is
20:19 this has the same 3.8 liter v8 twin-turbo as pretty much all the other
McLaren’s they just keep tuning them differently so this version of it has
592 horsepower and 457 foot-pounds of torque which is probably underrated so
far a lot of these MacLaren’s you’ve seen them do dyno runs on them and they
actually have substantially more horsepower than you would think and of
course the craziest thing is once you tune these things they just get
ridiculous numbers of horsepower I admit McLaren has a pretty awesome
engine but the one thing that’s kind of scary about these cars is they have had
a lot of transmission issues not this particular model but just MacLaren’s in
general however I’ve read that supposedly that’s kind of been sorted
out so the good news is that it seems like this thing is a fairly well sorted
car so here’s where it gets kind of crazy the 0 to 60 in this car is 2.7 to
2.9 seconds depending who you’re asking the official rating is 2.9 but other
people have driven these and said they actually got a 2.7 that is some hyper
car territory numbers that is ridiculous they also run the quarter mile and get
this a 10 point for holy crap that is ridiculous from the factory this is an
insanely insanely fast car 23% of the parts in this car are totally unique and
new to this car versus the 570 and it’s actually 100 kilograms lighter so I
shaved off about 220 pounds from the 570 that is HUGE that also means this car is
under 3000 pounds what that also means is believe it or not this car is
actually faster than the 675 LT and even faster than the 720 s one nice thing
that they did is they kind of got rid of some of the active Aero bits I actually
personally think that that’s kind of gimmicky where you got the tailings and
moving around and stuff I get it some people think it’s cool I think a fixed
wing actually makes more sense and certainly it’s a lot lighter so that’s
one way they shaved some of the way it also has fixed carbon fiber parts all
over this massive front diffuser that sticks way out the front of the car
there’s one thing that kind of makes me scared about these McLaren sori I guess
it’s just kind of a weird thing that they continuously do is all the
McLaren’s have an open differential yes they do not have any sort of locking
differential which means that all the Corning abilities in traction can
Rolle is managed by the computer and by the braking system so they actually does
things where it’s grabbing the brakes and releasing the brakes and that sort
of stuff which makes it have kind of a wonky feeling about it and certainly
that means if you turn off all the traction control aids and computer aids
this thing would be scary as hell I personally am NOT going to do that and I
would not recommend you do that unless you’re really really good at driving
another thing that McLaren does that kind of frustrates the hell out of me as
a DIY or is you cannot access the engine easily so there is no engine bonnet
engine hood whatever want to call it you can’t just push a button and pop it up
no unfortunately it’s kind of all bolted down and you have to take off bodywork
in order to get this thing out and get access to it if you’re a DIY er like me
this means you know you’re gonna have some trouble if you want to maintain
this thing yourself or work on it and that’s the other problem is getting
parts for these cars is really difficult you can’t just go online and order some
parts from a can be for example there is really no other supplier other than
McLaren so if you’re planning on buying parts for this the parts are really
expensive hard to get and you only have really one source another thing that’s
kind of crappy about that is this is an open vent system so if it rains and gets
dirty you can’t really get in there to clean your engines I mean yeah you can’t
really see it that much anyway I mean you can see it through the vents I don’t
know why McLaren does that I guess they really don’t want you work on the car
yourself something that’s kind of strange is they actually only have two
85s on this car but they are the p0 Trofeo ours so these are sticky as hell
you’re not gonna get a whole lot of miles of use on these things but if
you’re going on the track whoo these are amazing tires unfortunately they’re
expensive and they do not wear very well so he’s only got about 3,000 miles on
these tires and they’re almost dead in fact the rears were already down to 330
seconds so he’s maybe got another 500 2,000 miles left on those tires before
ice to get new ones that’s kind of a little bit too aggressive for me if
you’re trying to street use this car I want to talk about the elephant in the
room which is maintenance and reliability so McLaren has a kind of
mixed bag of history I’ve met a lot of McLaren owners and they’ve had a lot of
weird issues with these cars that is one of the things that scares me a lot about
McLaren personally if I wasn’t buying McLaren
I would make sure it has a warranty that’s just me I don’t think they’re as
sorted as Ferrari or Lamborghini I think they’re getting much better so if you
compare this car to the 12c totally nine-day difference I would feel far
more comfortable owning this car than it would the 12c 12c scares the crap out of
me even then they still have some wonky issues for example david has had to have
the windshield on his car replaced three times why is that well they designed it
such that the glass is so thin and ends up getting stress fractures down here in
the lower driver’s side corner and this has happened to many many owners of the
600 LT I think it’s because they actually made the glass too thin kind of
a strange weird thing the good news is under warranty and so they replace it
but every time that happens he has to send the car off to McLaren and it’s
gone for a little while and that is one of the other problems least for us here
in Austin is there is no McLaren dealership in Austin so every time this
thing breaks you have to have McLaren come pick up the car and take it over to
Houston the good news is that they do that they’ll trailer the car for you bad
news is then your car’s gone for even longer than it would be if it was a
local dealership so ultimately what I would say is I personally am a bit
sceptical about the reliability of these cars but I do think that they’ve finally
come around enough that that would not deter me from wanting to buy this car
for example so I would be willing to buy a new richelene versus an older McLaren
although I still would have run a warranty because without the ability to
DIY it that kind of presents a problem for me personally at least with a
Ferrari I feel like if something were to go wrong even if it was a new car
you could still get the parts fairly easily and you could actually work on
the car really easily this car something goes wrong that’s substantial it’s gonna
be expensive to get the parts and it’s going to be even worse to get access to
like the engine bay for example or even something as simple as changing the oil
that is a problem but if you’re not a DIY then you don’t really care about
those sorts of things well then just make sure you got a warranty and you’re
good to go of course no McLaren video would be complete without demonstrating
the ultra cool doors so you have a little button right here you click it
and it unlocks the door and voila it opens like magic and you’ve got the
billionaire doors these are not the doors of a billionaire
Richard so something that the owner was showing me just a few minutes before he
left that’s actually a really cool feature is so here’s the remote –
obviously lock the car unlock it and pop the trunk normally to unlock the car you
just push this button once it unlocks the car but he showed me this cool trick
which is you push it twice and it actually automatically pops the door for
you so then all you have to do is just lift it anywhere you don’t have to go
find that little button you just lift up the door that’s a really cool feature
they also have this cool hidden button right here on the inside of the door to
pop the trunk so if you want a pop you just push that button so lifting up the
trunk you can see it actually has a fairly reasonable sized front you can
actually fit a couple bags in there maybe even a couple suitcases I’m
actually impressed this is certainly a lot better than the Huracan I don’t know
if it’s quite as large as the four five eight or even the four eight eight for
that matter but it’s really deep I mean you can see it goes down quite far so if
you’re going on a rally or a day trip in this car you actually could I heard moe
I think he’s jealous that I haven’t put in the garage yet moe okay oh okay help
me do this review moe I know No do not get in the car
you can smell No ACK stay clear my shut the door
moe move your head I don’t trust you what you think Moe we have an enemy of
the state in the garage yes I know well what does that go all the things you’re
gonna be so disappointed mo i blew all the leaves out of the garage this
morning there’s no leaves in here but yeah you can smell that that’s fine so
having ridden and driven a few MacLaren’s now the one thing I will say
about the McLaren’s that kind of sucks is getting in and out it’s actually much
harder than a Ferrari because you do have this carbon fiber tub that sticks
way up right here so their dorsal is massive don’t get in there do not get in
there so you kind of have to like sit your butt in first and then slide your
legs up and over you can’t just like crawl in with your leg first the problem
with that isn’t so much for us dudes it’s when you have a date who’s wearing
a skirt or a dress that becomes a big problem they kind of have to do this
like spread leg thing to get out well most women aren’t going to appreciate
that very much but on that same note the fact that this is a
carbon fiber tub it actually gives the car a little bit more stiffness and it’s
a lot lighter than some of the other cars like the Ferraris and Lamborghinis
this is actually in my opinion a superior design choice and I do really
appreciate the fact they have this there have been pictures of these MacLaren’s
that have been absolutely destroyed hey get out of there do not do that no and
unfortunately when that happens when these cars do get wrecked the good news
is that the drivers are usually okay the passenger is usually okay the car is
completely destroyed and gone the technology keeping it safe is actually
remarkably good if you’re gonna crash a supercar you might want to crash a
mclaren versus a Ferrari Lamborghini all right I’m gonna show you how to crawl on
this the best way so he actually sits backwards in it so you go in backwards
like this with your butt first press it on the door well and then slightly buddy
then pull on your feet see that’s how you look like the expert McLaren guy if
you just try and put your leg in first yeah it’s kind of wonky so unfortunately
I haven’t really gotten graceful at the getting up part so yeah again put your
feet out first and scoot your butt over I’ve heard people say the best way to do
it is just kind of put your butt right here on the sill and then stand up so
there’s one other problem I noticed with the billionaire doors or the McLaren
doors because these aren’t scissor doors they’re McLaren doors let’s be real they
don’t go up they go kind of out and up and car whose doors open like this not
like this not like this the problem is that they take up a lot of space in my
garage so if I had this car parked over on the side I could not open up the
passenger door at all and the other trick is if I had another car in here it
would be a tight squeeze so you probably need to have a little bit larger than
normal garage certainly more space than usual on the left and right sides if you
want to be able to get in the car now to be fair when I park my Ferrari on the
side no one gets in on the passenger door anyway because I kind of hug the
wall also you got to worry about height pretty close to my garage door when it’s
open so this car basically has no storage there’s no glovebox there’s very
limited storage like there’s nothing in the doors obviously if you put stuff in
the doors it would fall out when the doors go open there is a tiny
little little tiny compartment right here there’s also a wee little pocket
right here between your legs little netting storage right here on the
passenger sides you’re not exactly gonna store a whole
lot of stuff in this car although there’s a little net back here and
there’s even a shelf which you can see works perfectly for storing a hat does
have a sticker that says do not store luggage back there so I guess you’re not
supposed to store luggage kind of makes sense if you stopped real hard at
luggage didn’t go right through your head McLaren has the drive neutral
reverse kind of buttons instead of having just the flappy paddles of course
we do have the flappy pedals one thing that’s really cool is that the flappy
pedals go forward and backward so you can actually shift either direction with
one paddle or the other pedal doesn’t matter which one I actually think that’s
kind of a handy feature when you’re driving these cars cuz every once in a
while you might only have one hand available or he’ll what if you were an
amputee that you’d be screwed driving a Ferrari it’d be very difficult so one
thing I noticed about every time I Drive McLaren is in order to get the car turn
on you have to push the brake really really hard you can’t just sort of push
the brake you got to really stand on the brake we got the computer on you could
see it’s got a really modern screen got modern controls it’s actually quite
impressive another thing that’s kind of wonky about this car is the seat
controls are really confusing they’re hidden right here on the inside of the
seat you can see over there on the passenger side and you can’t really see
them very well they’re kind of down in there but they have a bunch of buttons
and they’re not exactly intuitively shaped it took me a good minute or two
to figure out exactly what you got you basically just start pushing buttons and
see how the seat reacts and then eventually you figure out oh okay here’s
how you actually need to do it another really cool feature of this McLaren is
the exhaust actually exits out of the top of the car that is pretty cool the
owner david told me that when you’re really on this thing it actually does
shoot out fire so at night you can actually look out the roof amir and see
flames shooting out the top of this car that is pretty badass i have to say also
the pops that this thing makes went down shifts you’ll hear them and they’re just
epic but we got this massive absolutely massive carbon fiber diffuser it is
really cool looking of course then we have a nice hidden little reverse camera
tiny teeny reverse light then we have these cool epic brake lights and turn
signals let me show what these things look like I will say that does give the
McLaren a very cool presence from the this is a pretty sexy looking car from
the rear although it almost looks a little bit like alien eyes kind of
staring at you doesn’t it’s like rare like I am a little face down here and
license plates the nose the other really cool thing about the lights both the
front and rear turn signals is that they actually emulate the McLaren logo of
course you know this by now so you can see this shape right here is actually
the same shape as the McLaren logos pretty cool that they pay that sort of
attention to detail okay I think we need to get out on the road because well
that’s the best part about this car so let’s see how this thing drives so one thing that’s kind of strange is
to activate the traction control buttons you actually have to push this button
called activate let me push that and now it goes into manual control it also
gives me different modes on the screen which are pretty neat let’s hear this
thing sounds like rubbing up can you really hear those terrible I’m raising
the vehicle goes well it’s really low like way lower than my Ferrari does so
this is kind of supposed to be like a track car so I’m going to kind of treat
it as such and keep the steering in a kind of aggressive position for me very
close to my chest unlike other MacLaren’s I’ve driven this
one does not start rolling when you put in gear so if I release the brake I’m
just rolling because I’m on a slight incline not because the car is pushing
the car already I can tell you this really responsive
the brake pedal is really firm very very firm you have to stand on the brake to
get to stock in this is meant to be like third track weapon and it’s behaving as
such speechless
like I told flop that one I the traction control kicked on and I
accident ship in second it’s a scar holy crap
that is fast we have to do that again I’m a fan already clearly I’m a fan of
this car it’s almost nauseating how fast this car is I will say there is a lot of
turbo lag but then when it kicks in it’s just wham it hits you hard it’s really
really intense how hard the torque hits you on this car so one thing that I
already like about this car a lot more and something other MacLaren’s I’ve
driven is that because of the lack of sound ending to obviously save weight
you can really hear that engine and it’s just I mean it’s right there it feels
like the engines on your back it’s it’s a really intense awesome sound much more
so than the other MacLaren’s are doing that felt a little bit numb the steering
already feels really good we’re about to go on a really twisty road so we’re
going to see how that feels I guess so far my only complaint is the
brake is really heavy which is great for track use but if you’re gonna be like
driving this thing around in kind of a normal setting it’s gonna get a little
bit tiring but it’s it’s fantastically responsive definitely in a bumpy car you feel
everything in the road there is no denying that this is a track-focused car kind of
another minute well done McLaren you
in a car that I really like it’s lost my stomach accelerates in her
this is as precise and track-focused as the best
Porsche gt3 can offer as a sorry for giving special I or I’m
assuming a pista it is just wow wow this car
holy crap it’s just epically fast
and responsive the shifts are just why confess
down shifts up ship doesn’t matter fast good thing it’s got good tracks control
because this would be scary scary without traction control I just broke
loose again right there and we were going pretty quick oh man I
think people are getting busted for parking I got a chill a little bed there
is some cops they’re giving a bunch of evil tickets drive it’s civilized for a minute I changed the suspension to normal and
it got a lot less bumpy I could feel the road less it’s a lot more manageable on
the street if you were going to be driving around the street you could
actually do so without getting your ass just totally beat up so it’s actually
kind of reasonable this is this is impressive for such a tracfone
focus car to actually be pleasant use it like you drive a gt3 RSR gt3 it’s
they’ll beat you up like you it’s got this shifts the ship panels are
on the steering wheel I just went to grabbing it wasn’t there it’s the one
thing I dislike I hate when the ship pedals are not in the column because
they move and you don’t know where they are if you’ve let go this truly is the
first McLaren that I could see myself owning and actually enjoyed the
it’s absolutely happen this car takes your breath away
it’s like intense that is so so fast it’s almost a bit too much for the
street it just fights for traction all through third gear
it just it’s just it needs bigger stick your tires which is crazy to think it’s
blowing off this Trofeo ours like they’re nothing
all right David you win I like this McLaren I would
I think they’re out of my price range still I feel like I’m cheating on my four or
five eight I haven’t played too much fun it’s really cool you look out the rear
it’s just all everything’s squiggly from the heat coming out of the exhaust I
haven’t touched the infotainment I don’t care I wouldn’t I guess it probably
works it probably does stuff and has a radio and I’m assuming Bluetooth and
shit you’re not gonna touch it yeah seriously doesn’t matter this pattern
all you wanna do is look forward forward visibility is perfect that this is
something that Rory and McLaren have down who stuck
ooh side visibility is kind of a it’s not the best post that Terrell rear
visibility it’s like a supercar I mean it’s it
no surprise there nothing nothing unusual about that
track-focused driver-focused it’s all about going fast it’s all about looking
at the road ahead of you and just going like a goddamn bad you’re gonna buy McLaren it’s the one you need I think mo heard
me arrive and he’s all pissed off and I’m not saying hey what do you think mo what you think I don’t worry
I’m putting have a Ferrari don’t worry mo I know I know don’t worry you still
have a Ferrari Wow this car is it’s epic it’s absolutely wow it is just stupid stupid fast really
really insane don’t worry fry you’re my one true love but finally in my opinion
this is the first nickel Aaron I really enjoyed I didn’t feel it was super numb
although the traction control was kicking in a lot it was doing so because
it was saving my ass and it didn’t feel too intrusive so the other MacLaren’s I
drove just felt so numb the steering felt numb the pedals felt numb the
responsiveness just kind of was yeah I mean they’ve all been super fast I will
say the McLaren’s have all been ridiculously fast and I do enjoy that
part of it but I felt like driving on the curves and stuff didn’t feel as good
and didn’t feel as responsive as this does this is amazing and we need to turn
the wheel and it just turns and it’s very precise but it’s you know what it’s
it’s a McLaren with soul yes that’s what this is this is the 600 sole
needless to say I am extremely impressed with this car again the only concerns I
would have Audient would be maintenance and also depreciation is a bit of a
concern because MacLaren’s historically have not held their values real well
unless you have some sort of super super rare McLaren this might be rare enough
that maybe some hold its value a bit better than some of the other McLaren
it’s time will tell I don’t know I I would be a little bit worried about that
then again if you’re gonna own the car for a long time that may not be a
concern and I don’t know much about how the warranties are in these cars but
yeah I could see stuff breaking and being very expensive that would be bad
that’s only negatives I can think of this thing that’s just Wow Wow Wow is it
a fast fun card this is what supercars are all about this is amazing absolutely
